From College Grad to Barista: My Journey and the Entry-Level Job Apocalypse (2026)

After graduating from college, I found myself in a familiar predicament: the struggle to secure a job in my desired field. Despite my aspirations to become a journalist in New York City, the reality was stark - I was a barista, and the job market was brutal. The entry-level job apocalypse, as I like to call it, had left me questioning my choices and my future.

The job market in NYC is a competitive beast, with entry-level job postings down 37.4% since 2022, according to the Center for an Urban Future. As I watched my job applications go unanswered, I began to wonder if it was time to pack up and move back home. But something kept me in the city - the hope of a big break, the dream of using my journalism degree, and the belief that my turn would come.

I was not alone in my predicament. My coworker, an aspiring actor, had been auditioning and working survival jobs since 2013, with no sign of a breakthrough. We both understood the waiting game, the endless cycle of applying, auditioning, and hoping. But something changed for me recently.

I received an offer for a full-time position in another East Coast city, in my desired field. It was a moment of clarity, a moment of realizing that I had been so focused on survival that I had forgotten my dream. The offer stirred up a dream I had begun to forget, and I realized that I was not ready to give up on my career aspirations just yet.

This past year of multiple jobs has been a blessing in disguise. It has brought me closer to the community, taught me to be content when things don't go as planned, and given me a new perspective on my career. I am no longer driven by obligation but by desire. And that is a powerful thing.

So, for now, I will stay in NYC, longing, seeking, and wondering when I'll find the next step in my dream. I will continue to push, hoping that the big break is just around the corner. Because in my opinion, the waiting game is worth it, and the dream is worth fighting for.
